Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Fasion Designer?

We all know what a fashion designer does. Do you have what it takes to be the next Manish Malhotra or the next Ritu Kumar?

The most important skills required in fashion designing are:

♦  Artistic Talent

♦  Good Eye For Detail

♦  What's Trending Vs. What's Practical
The ability to understand the practical needs of the market for which you're designing and to stay updated with what's trending, what the public is buying and what other designers are creating

♦  Visualization
Good fashion designers have strong visualization skills. They are able to transform ideas into designs on paper and finally into a finished product

♦  Communication Skills
Fashion designers build a strong portfolio of their work and showcase the same to potential customers. However, they also need to have good communication and interpersonal skills to be able to present their ideas and influence customers.

The design industry also has various other options apart from fashion like graphic designing, interior designing, jewelry designing, product designing and even package designing.

How do I Get There?

After completing 10+2 with any stream you can go for a design course in the field of your choice. B.Des. (Bachelor in Design) is a four year degree course. There are many design institutes all over India: National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad; National Institute of Fashion Technology at various places, Footwear Design & Development Institute, New Delhi etc.

Allied Options

Today, there are other allied careers in the fashion industry like being an art director for a fashion magazine or a creative director for a garment store.

Creative directors are expected to keep up with fashion trends and developments to produce trendy outfits for a department store or magazine.

It is not an area where you can become a creative director just after doing a particular course. First you have to work as a copywriter, designer, art director or do a similar creative job, and show an aptitude not only for the creative side, but for the business side of advertising and marketing.
